About the Artists

Sasha Sound is a concert and jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, and music educator. He performed concerts in Russia, Europe, and the US. Sasha was a teaching assistant in the piano area and jazz studies at the University of Iowa. In the Spring of 2018 Sasha completed his doctorate at the University of Iowa. His final thesis is dedicated to the analysis and performance of tempo and rhythmical principles Al Rigore and Flessibile in Medtner's compositions. As a part of his final doctoral project, Sasha recorded Medtner's solo works: Tales op. 20, op. 34 No. 2,3, Three pieces op.31 including Improvisation op. 31 No. 1, and the Second Improvisation, op. 47.He also served as a piano faculty at Iowa Wesleyan College and at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. He currently holds a Master Teacher position at Pacific Piano School in San Jose, California.

Mari Kawamura is a concert pianist whose curiosity has taken her in a variety of directions ranging from improvisation and dance to biology and physics. Kawamura is drawn to music, which utilizes the entirety of the piano as an expressive device. She is as equally fascinated by works that showcase the tremendous agility of the instrument, as by compositions that explore its ability to produce cavernous resonances, complex spectral sounds, and unpitched noise. After studying with Stephen Drury at the New England Conservatory, she pursued her Doctorate in Contemporary Music Performance at the University of California, San Diego, where she trained under Aleck Karis. Her research dealt with ma, an ancient Japanese concept concerning space and time, and is focused on identifying ma-like structures in music outside of Japan's sphere of influence with the goal of demonstrating that the concept of “charged stillness” is a widespread global phenomenon.

Pianist Grisha Krivchenia in Recital

Pianist Grisha Krivchenia in Recital

Music by the Mountain is very pleased to welcome back pianist Grisha Krivchenia to Siskiyou County! Not heard in our area since June 2019, we are excited to host this powerhouse of a performer, who delights audiences with his technique, versatility and approachability. Lauded as “the coolest classical musician around” (Santa Fe Reporter) and “presiding over outstanding technique” (Bergisches Zeitung), Grisha Krivchenia is a versatile artist whose performances and original compositions enthrall audiences throughout the northern hemisphere.

Grisha’s program in Mt. Shasta on May 8th (Mother’s Day—make it a date!) will include Liszt’s Funerailles, Schubert’s Sonata in A Major, D664, and Ginastera’s Danzas Argentinas. Especially considering our current world politics, Franz Listz’s Funerailles is a very timely choice: it is an elegy written as response to the Habsburg crushing of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 (three of Liszt’s personal friends suffered either death or exile as a result). Schubert’s Sonata in A Major, D664 is the shortest of his piano sonatas with a character both lyrical and buoyant, evocative of a young Schubert in love and reveling in a summery Austrian countryside. Alberto Ginastera was a leading 20th Century Latin American composer, and his Danzas Argentinas (Argentine Dances) are a deservedly perennial audience favorite. We look forward to seeing you there!
